How to get a temporary phone number
A temporary phone number receives an SMS verification code without using your own number. Here is how it works and what to look for.
A temporary phone number is a real number you rent for a short time to receive an SMS verification code, then let go. It keeps your personal number off a service’s records and out of marketing databases, while still letting you sign up or verify an account normally.
The steps
- Pick the service you are verifying and a country for the number.
- Reserve a private, one-time number. On TempCode you see the live success rate per country before you pay.
- Enter the number on the service, then read the incoming SMS code on the same page.
- You are done. The number was used once and is not reused by you again.
What makes a good temporary number
Reliability is the whole point. A free public number is shared by thousands of people and is usually already used on the service you want, so the code never arrives. A private, used-once operator number actually delivers. A fair provider also refunds you automatically when no code comes, so a dead number never costs you anything.
You can browse numbers by service or by country, for example an instant number for Instagram, Telegram or WhatsApp, or a country-specific number such as a United States or Germany line.
FAQ
Is a temporary number the same as a free SMS site?
No. Free sites share one public number across thousands of people, so the code is usually gone before you arrive. A rented number is private and used once.
Do I need an app?
No. You rent the number and read the SMS in your browser. There is no app and no subscription.
